You almost have to do a double take when you see Andy Allo, but yes: she is indeed the girl from Tee Tee’s wing truck.
While most people know her as the girl who was on The Game, Allo is a musician at heart. She cities Michael Jackson, OutKast, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Floetry, and India.Arie as some of her biggest influences and listening to her music it’s easy to hear them coming through.
The Cameroon born and raised, Allo also has German, Welsh, and Irish roots. She dropped her debut album in September 2009. The LP, Unfresh, garnered attention from critics and was the first of what Allo calls a new genre: Alter.Hip.Soul. A combination of alternative, hip-hop, and soul, the music is as unique as Allo herself.
This year, her stint on the BET series gave Allo some exposure allowing people to get to know her name. But it is her singing that has people most excited. A skilled guitarist herself, Allo has only been with her band for little over a year now, but the music they’ve put out so far has been getting noticed by industry insiders.
I first heard Allo’s voice last year on a track called, “Dreamland” with rapper Blu, but didn’t connect the dots between the voice and the girl with the curly hair in Malik’s bathtub. Now, hearing her music, I am excited for her to give us some more. Her covers of well known songs like Bob Marley’s “Waiting in Vain”, create a small little world where it feels like its just you and her. It’s a gift and I definitely hope she shares more of it with us in the future.
