Things are going great for power couple Salim and Mara Brock Akil. Last weekend, “Jumping the Broom” landed as the number one comedy in the country. The box office hit staring Laz Alonso and Paula Patton brought in $15.3 million dollars.

Today, the good news keeps pouring in as the couple’s Akil Productions inked a deal with BET. Under the multi year agreement, Salim and Mara will work to develop new shows and elevate the networks line up of scripted shows as they have with the successful sitcom, “The Game” averaging 4.6 million viewers.

Speaking on the new deal, Mara said:

“Our goal is to expand on our existing brand, by way of Akil Productions, to create new opportunities for ourselves and others. BET has provided us with a tremendous platform to create smart, funny and dramatic, quality programming with multi-layered and multi-dimensional characters appealing to millions of viewers.”

In a statement, Loretha Jones, President of Original Programming at BET Networks said:

“We’re thrilled to build on the very important relationship between our network and the Hollywood creative community, especially with two proven powerhouses in entertainment – Salim and Mara Brock Akil. Through this partnership we hope to continue to bring our audience high quality content that reflects their lives and our communities.”

I am so proud of them. It’s nice to see an African American couple doing good & hopefully will bring more color to our TVs & computers…Congrats….I’ll be watching for upcoming shows.

  • They are beautiful individuals and a beautiful couple. It great to see them flourishing as a power couple and if this had been anounced 2 years ago I would have been overjoyed to see them signing a multi-year deal to produce black scripted television. However, this deal is with BET and The Game isn’t nearly what it was on the CW, so I have to admit that I’m a bit suspicious on how this will end.

I agree. For a network that calls itself Black Entertainment Television, BET seems set on creating negative images of our community. When The Game was on BET, the characters were much more multi-faceted. Once they got to BET, the Akils seemed set on the Sabers & Co. as stereotypical as possible. Hopefully this works out for the best. I’m hopeful they’ll create well-rounded Black characters that we can both be proud of and relate to.

Happy for their success. They are a cute couple too

  • I’m just curious. Why is this movie Jumping the Broom which takes place in Martha’s Vineyard. There is also another movie that came out a few years before called Jumping the Broom which takes place in Martha’s Vineyard. Both movies damn near have the same story line. I’m not hating on the new one but they could have been a little more creative on the name and location.

Alhumdiuallah for this beautiful power couple, I couldn’t be happier. This is the best decision BET has made in many years, I believe wholeheartedly that they will deliver wholesome and enjoyable television shows. My son lives in California and has written 3 shows, I will make dua that his show gets produced by the Akil’s . Much success!
