Our FLOTUS Michelle Obama has the most intelligent, thoughtful approach to Fashion. She regularly wears designers that are tied to the countries she visits. An example is her choice of Indian-American designer, Naeem Khan at the India State Dinner.
During her legendary trip to South Africa along with daughters Malia and Sasha, she wore another outfit with cultural significance: a $60 oversized blouse from ASOS Africa.
Made in Mombasa, ASOS Africa’s fair trade collection helps enable Kenya’s underprivileged communities to create jobs through SOKO Kenya, a clothing workshop that provides fair-wage employment and training.
That Michelle Obama chose a shirt from ASOS Africa’s collection shows her cognizance and sensitivity to issues in countries across the globe and specifically in the country of Kenya. It’s especially compelling that she lent her support to ASOS Africa’s initiative during her visit to the continent.
Of Michelle Obama’s choice to wear ASOS Africa, ASOS CEO Nick Robertson told Vogue:
“We are thrilled at ASOS to have Michelle Obama – someone who continues to be a great ambassador for fashion – flying our flag abroad. ASOS Africa is our dedicated ethical collection, now in its third season and produced in Kenya by 25 local craftspeople to help empower the community, so it feels very appropriate to have the First Lady wearing it whilst doing valuable humanitarian work in South Africa.”
Fashion is always regarded as superficial but our FLOTUS proves you can be intelligent and even compassionate in your clothing choices. And as if we haven’t praised her enough already, we have to add: we love the feminine and dressy touch her vest and wideleg jeans add to the blouse.
What do you think of Michelle Obama’s ASOS Africa blouse and her historic trip to South Africa?
The ASOS Africa blouse retails for $60.34 and is available here.
