Mos Def has been in the game, literally for decades. And while he was once only known for his lyrics and holding the flame of conscious hip-hop, the rapper has branched out since his early days. Mos has starred in movies, done rock, sang for us but what he does next- we’re not sure how this one will go over.
The star says he will be shedding the name Mos Def. But Mos is no reverse Ron Artest. The rapper, born Dante Terrell Smith, says he will be using a new alias:
“I’m retiring the Mos Def name after 2011. I’m actually doing it. Yasiin. That’s it.”
So why is the rapper changing his name now? As he explains to MTV News:
“Mos Def is a name that I built and cultivated over the years, it’s a name that the streets taught me, a figure of speech that was given to me by the culture and by my environment, and I feel I’ve done quite a bit with that name and it’s time to expand and move on. Also, I didn’t want to have to deal with having any moniker or separation between the self that I see and know myself as.”
Something tells me, it will be harder for Mos to get folks to stop calling him Mos, than it will for Ron Artest to make “Metta World Peace” stick.
