But according to Mr. Illmatic, Winehouse’s hit song, “Me and Mr. Jones” was about him.
Nas–born Nasir Jones–recently told XXL he and Winehouse were planning a joint birthday celebration (they share the same birthday, September 14), but sadly she passed away before they could celebrate.
Nas told XXL: “I don’t really remember if Salaam [Nas’ longtime producer], who was really close to her, who introduced us, if he told me about it or not. I don’t remember right now. But, I heard a lot about it before I even heard the song.”
Although rumors have circulated for years that Winehouse had a crush on the Queens emcee, interpretations on her song, ‘Me and Mr. Jones” have varied. In the song, Winehouse sings:
What kind of fuckery are you?
Side from Sammy you’re my best black Jew
But I could swear that we were through (we were through)
I still want to wonder ’bout the things you do
Mr. Destiny, 9 and 14
Nobody stands in between me and my man
‘Cause it’s Me and Mr Jones (Me and Mr Jones)
Many said the line “Mr. Destiny 9 and 14” referred to Nas’ teenage daughter, Destiny, and his and Winehouse’s shared birthday.
If the rumors are true, I can’t say that I blame Winehouse. I’ve had a crush on Nasir since ’93, so I totally get it. I just wished the two had been able to team up on a track. Talk about epic!
