Almost from the beginning, the phrase “no homo” completely annoyed me. Not only is it disrespectful to gay and lesbian people, but it’s absolutely ridiculous. The amount of men (and even women) that utter the phrase after the smallest of compliments or “questionable” phrases is astounding (can we also add “pause” to the list?).
These days it seems like giving someone a complement requires you qualify it with some idiotic phrase to assure the listener that your words are strictly platonic. But I’ve even heard the phrase uttered during completely not sexual contexts, as in, “Hey man…can I borrow your pencil? No homo,” or “Yo! That jersey is dope, no homo.”
It just doesn’t make any sense.
Up until now I’ve just called it stupid, unable to really articulate what it is that sucks so much about the phrase, but once again, Franchesca Ramsey captures it perfectly.
