Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players of all time and, thanks to her enviable total domination in the sport, has almost too many victories and prizes to count. So it’s surprising to hear her admit that although she plans on continuing to play, she doesn’t have the love for tennis that one would think she does.
From her press conference in Brisbane, Australia:
“I mean I don’t love tennis today, but I’m here, and I can’t live without it, so I’m still here and I don’t want to go anywhere any time soon…it’s not that I’ve fallen out of love – I’ve actually never liked sports, and I never understood how I became an athlete. I don’t like working out, I don’t like anything that has to do with working physically. If it involves sitting down or shopping, I’m excellent at it.”
Williams won two sets yesterday in Brisbane’s tournament after a four month hiatus from sports, but has come to consider the matches and traveling to play tennis “redundant.” She plans to reduce her number of matches this year to focus on her clothing line, acting, writing, and producing. It’s pretty eye-opening to realize that in spite of her exceptional talent, Serena Williams is like most people just working for a check and using her income to pursue her true passions.
