The BET Honors is like an odd stepchild in the award show world. It’s not sexy or flashy like the Grammy’s or the regular BET Awards, nor does it try to be.
For that reason it can be a little bit quiet and slow but this year’s awards had some great moments that are worth waiting for. I ended up watching the show twice – half of a time when it aired on Monday and then again when it aired last night. Gabrielle Union was funny as the host, the honorees had some interesting things to say, and the tributes — including performances from Patti Labelle, Kelly Rowland, Jennifer Hudson, and others — were solid. This one, feautring Queen Latifah, Willow Smith, Cicely Tyson, and Jill Scott reciting “Still I Rise” in honor of Maya Angelou, gave me a major “proud to be a black girl” moment.
Maya Angelou, Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey , Spike Lee, the Tuskegee Airmen, and coach Beverly Kearney were all honored on the program, which re-airs this Saturday and again next Thursday. It’s definitely worth check out!
