For the past few weeks I’ve been happily singing along to Lelah Hathaway’s remake of Sade’s “Cherish the Day.” Although I would have scoffed at anyone ATTEMPTING to touch the classic tune, Lelah handles it effortlessly and somehow makes it her own.

Hearing Lelah’s remake made me think of others I enjoy, sometimes even better than the original.

A few that come to mind are D’angelo’s remake of Smokey Robinson’s Crusin, Method Man and Mary J. Blige’s take on Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s You’re All I Need, Lauryn Hill’s Killing Me Softly remake, and of course Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You.

What’s your favorite remake?

Maxwell made me a super dupa fan by covering Kate Bush as I’m a huge groupie of her body of work.

That George Michael remake of Stevie’s joint is the bomb. Not as good as the original, of course, but awesome nevertheless. Thanks for introducing me to it.

    • You’re welcome- and while you’re at it, check out another remake of a Stevie Wonder song: “If She Breaks Your Heart” by The Foreign Exchange

The covers I love aren’t really all that popular, I don’t think. But off the top of my head, I’d have to go with “Maggie’s Farm” originally by Dylan remade by the Specials. “Tears of Clown” by Smokey as done by English Beat. “Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos” by P.E. as performed by Tricky and friend. And, finally, “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'” originally done by Nancy Sinatra, but I like the 7 Seconds version.

Alot of my favorites have made several list…..I’ll add:

Sinead O’connor-Nothing Compares To You (originally by Prince)
Phil Collins-True Colors(originally by Cyndi Lauper)
Inoj-Time After Time(originally by Cyndi Lauper)
