For a little background, Kusama is the queen of polka dots—that’s basically all the Japanese artist ever uses in her work—and back in 2006 she gave LV creative director Marc Jacobs a Louis bag that she hand-painted with her famous dots. He fell in love, and six years later, the brand decided they might be able to make a whole line of of the dotted look and that’s what they’re going to unveil to the world on July 10.
Louis Vuitton is taking the polka dots well beyond their bags. There will be trenchcoats, silk pajamas, watches, silk dresses, bathing suits, knitwear, accessory charms, and quote, “terrific shoes,” Jacobs says. Basically anything they can put polka dots on, they will. So far only two looks have been released in the preview to the collection. This black and yellow look and the more subdued style below. Jacobs says the combination of LV’s monogram with Kusama’s dots make this collection “endless, timeless, and forever” but it’s such a trendy look that when people see you with this bag, they’ll know it’s from the summer 2012 line, on the spot–literally. It’s only a short while before we see the rest of this collection in all of it’s glory.
