It’s a sad day when a black man can’t even say “go down” without people claiming that it’s about sex.

That’s exactly what happened to President Obama when he met with supporters at an LGBT Leadership Council event hosted by his good friend Ellen DeGeneres. Making an innocent joke about how First Lady Michelle Obama beat DeGeneres in a push-up competition, Obama had this to say according to the White House official transcript:

I want to thank my wonderful friend who accepts a little bit of teasing about Michelle beating her in pushups — (laughter) — but I think she claims Michelle didn’t go all the way down. (Laughter.) That’s what I heard. I just want to set the record straight — Michelle outdoes me in pushups as well. (Laughter.) So she shouldn’t feel bad. She’s an extraordinary talent and she’s just a dear, dear friend — Ellen DeGeneres. Give Ellen a big round of applause. (Applause.)

Somehow, once sites like PoliticoBuzzfeed and Business Insider got wind of the joke, they jumped on “go all the way down” faster than you can say fellatio:

“Emboldened by an enthusiastic reception from Hollywood’s gay elite, President Barack Obama made what appeared to be an off-color joke about his wife and Ellen DeGeneres during a fundraiser last night,” wrote BI’s Grace Wyler.

Huffington Post reported that the White House pool reporter perceived sexual undertones as well:

He warmed up with some jokes about the first lady’s appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show. “Michelle outdoes me in pushups as well,” he said, after saying that she’s taken some criticism on her technique “because she doesn’t go all the way down” -– a line that he let hang, naughtily, provoking laughter from the crowd.

Salon blogger Alex Pareene called the salacious reporting out for exactly what it is:

“It’s stupid, and most of the people with jobs as political reporters are at least literate, and understand that this thing did not happen,” he wrote. “So don’t repeat it, or even write that “some say” they thought it maybe happened.”

It’s extremely telling that of the 8 years that Obama has been on the public stage, he has never once disrespected his wife or discussed their sex life — or even alluded to it. But all of a sudden he feels so “comfortable” around his gay buddies that he makes oral sex jokes about her? Why is that? Because stereotypical myths and prejudices about black men and homosexuals as it pertains to sex were brought to light by a simple joke.

How absolutely pathetic.
