Fall’s almost here and there’s no better time to change up your hair color than in the midst of changing seasons. While a new color can accentuate your personal style, it’s important to make health a top priority. Here are a few Do’s & Don’ts to keep in mind before coloring your hair.

Do…

deep condition your tresses. Whether you use a temporary or permanent color, it’s pivotal that you give your tresses a good deep condition at least twice monthly.

Don’t…

wash your hair right before you get it colored. Yes, clean hair is a necessity, but the natural oils that your scalp produces help protect it from damage. Shampoo strips your hair of this oil, so hold-out until your dye job is finished.

Do…

be conscious of the frequency of your dye jobs. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with keeping your tresses looking fresh, but too many touch ups (especially with permanent color) can weaken the hair shaft and cause breakage.

Don’t…

relax and color at the same time. The best way to have unhealthy hair is to over process it. Your hair goes through enough stress when it’s being relaxed, and dying it takes a toll as well. Put a 10-14 day window between each treatment. So, if you dye your hair, wait at least 10 days to color it and vice versa.

Do…

have fun and be adventurous with your color choices. Auburn and honey hues are always fall-ready looks. If you don’t want to switch up your full coiffure’s hue, add some highlights to brighten up your style.
