BET continues its quest to ramp up its scripted programming and finally be the network many black folks have wanted it to be.
According to film and TV blog Shadow & Act, Kelly Rowland has signed on to play the lead role in a new pilot called What Would Dylan Do.
The show, produced by Warren Hutcherson (‘The Bernie Mac Show’) and Julian Breece (of the web series ‘Buppies’), will feature Rowland as a “L.A.-based struggling relationship blogger” who is living with her gal pals and trying to get her life together.
To be titled What Would Dylan Do, Rowland will of course star as the titular Dylan, described as “a struggling L.A.-based relationship blogger” rooming with her best friend Cherise, and Brooke (she’s divorced and wealthy), when her ex-fiancee comes back into her life, causing her to rethink their relationship.
Joining Rowland in the cast will be Brandon Scott (aka Dr. Ryan Spalding on Grey’s Anatomy) will play Dylan’s ex-financee (don’t worry, if you don’t know him, he’s black); also Gabrielle Dennis from The Game will play bext friend Cherise, while newcomer Melanie Liburd will play the rich divorcee Brooke.
Although BET has’t ordered the series yet, it sounds promising. If picked up, the show would join BET’s exciting fall line-up which includes The Game; Gabrielle Union’s new show, Being Mary Jane; Tracee Ellis Ross’ Reed Between the Lines; Ava Duvernay’s award-winning film Middle of Nowhere, Larenz Tate’s cop drama, Gun Hill, and the late-night news roundtable, Don’t Sleep with TJ Holmes.
I don’t know about you, but for the first time in forever I’m excited to see what BET has in store for the fall.
