Not everyone has access to makeup artists, hairstylists, nail technicians and eyebrow gurus like Kelly Rowland, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna. But for many everyday women, the pressure to be glamorous every time you step out of the house is the same.

I can’t count how many conversations I’ve had with girlfriends, stressing over how they need their eyebrows done or their nails are a mess. I’ve even known women who won’t come out to an event if their hair isn’t done.

We know black hair is a billion dollar industry, and eyebrow grooming services and nail salons are successful as well. It’s in large part due to the social demands of having “nails did, hair did, everything did,” and putting your money behind the meme.

Monthly beauty costs can easily border on the expensive side, when you factor in a manicure and pedicure, a weekly visit to the hair salon, body hair waxing and more. When you add up all the money you spend on beauty needs a month, and a year, you realize looking beautiful can come at a steep price.

Once I tallied up the costs of my glamorous habit, I quickly saw an opportunity to save and keep some extra money in my pocket. I was able to cut down some of the expenses by opting to do my hair and nails by myself, though after an eyebrow plucking session gone wrong, I still leave waxing to the professionals.

What about you, Clutchettes? How much do you spend on monthly beauty maintenance? How do you cut costs, if at all?

I have locs and I must have them maintained so I go to the stylist once a month at a rate of $65 including a wash, deep condition, retwist and style. However, I am once again back in school so when I do not have money for my hair, I will sometimes go two months without having my hair retwisted – being a college student is HARD and between choosing to buy groceries or getting my hair done – you already know which decision I will make. I have gone many a time looking like who done it and why? LOL. But I am the person who will look busted and disgusted but hey at least I have a roof over my head and food to eat in the sake of appearances. I also try to get my eyebrows waxed once a month because I am hairy… thanks to genetics on my dad’s side. So maybe $75 a month or $75 every two months or even three months depending on how hard times are. And considering how frugal I am with everything else – my friends say I would stretch water if possible, that is good.

grooming & maintenance is important, however, i know too many young women who are in college like myself & spend much more than part-time jobs can support. it’s not worth it. spend about $70-80 a month, i get my toes & eyebrows done once 2x a month & pluck in between, get my hair washed, deep conditioned & curled once a week, (but it’s only $12 at the dominicans here in BK, thank god). i used to spend more but i’d rather spend my extra $$$ on good food, books.
