The Twelve Tribes of Hattie – Ayana Mathis

A well rounded woman is a woman who reads, and whether you love the traditional comfort of a hardcover or the modern convenience of an e-reader, indulging in a good book feeds the mind and soothes the soul. Here are three books that are sure to be welcome additions to any book collection.

The Twelve Tribes of Hattie – Ayana Mathis
Everyone knows that Oprah’s seal of approval is as good as the Midas touch and that’s exactly what Oprah gave author Ayana Mathis when she chose her debut book “The Twelve Tribes of Hattie” as her latest book club pick.  Mathis’ debut begins with fifteen-year-old Hattie Shepherd who flees Georgia in 1923 and settles in Philadelphia. From there readers follow Hattie as she raises nine children and endures and overcomes the hardest of life’s challenges. Captured in twelve luminous narrative threads, the lives of Hattie’s children tell the story of a mother’s monumental courage and the journey of a nation.

I wish that more people read. Especially our young people. Estimates are that only about 6% of society reads a book from cover to cover. l listen to books on cd; love the animation of an author reading their own book out loud. In a lot of cases it’s like listening to a live play. Right now I have 8 audiobooks on my night stand. I borrow them from the library

  • I needed some books to start off the new year with!
