The violence in the American war zone that is Chicago, Illinois has claimed another African-American victim, adding to already 40 homicides in the first month of this new year, 2013. Tragically, yesterday afternoon, the world lost a very bright 15-year-old honor student, Hadiya Pendleton.
According to an initial report by the Chicago Tribune, Hadiya was enjoying the canopy of a neighborhood park during a rainstorm with a male friend, 16, when the assailant jumped a fence and opened fire on a group of teens standing nearby.
Four teens were confirmed in serious to critical condition, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight. Hadiya was shot once in the back and later died at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital.
Pendleton was an honor student, volleyball player, and majorette at King College Prep, according to CBS 2 in Chicago. She was a member of the school’s marching band that traveled to Washington for the inauguration festivities last week.
