Michelle Obama + Vivienne Westwood

Adding to the great list of people who’ve commented on First Lady Michelle Obama’s clothes to a wide, Mrs. O loving audience who doesn’t give a rip is designer Vivienne Westwood.

I don’t want to talk about it. Really, I can’t. She’s a very nice looking lady, but it’s a nonstarter regarding clothes that suit her. Jackie Kennedy was a different matter altogether. It just has to suit her and be something that makes a human being more glamorous. That’s what fashion is there for. It’s there to help, not just to make you look more conservative.

Oh. OK.

My theory is always the designers who “hate”  Mrs. O’s fashion are the one’s Mrs.O doesn’t wear. Oscar de La Renta famously threw a fit after being the go-to guy for several First Lady’s and Mrs. O had the gall to wear European designers when she visited Europe. But Mrs. Obama has mostly preferred ready-to-wear by lines such as White House Black Market, J. Crew and many designers of color, like Thankoon, Jason Wu and Tracey Reese.

Mrs. Obama largely wears lesser known American designers and buys from American labels, so all this is really a bunch of shaaaaaade from designers who know Mrs. O is a style icon and bristle at not getting to be part of this All-American fashion party by virtue of their pricey, European status.

Fashion, as in the high art end of fashion, is supposed to be aspirational. The First Lady is tall, built like an Amazonian and highly aspirational, yet she doesn’t deign to wear their rags so instead of “getting it” (she’s an American, our economy is crappy, so she’s buying American, besides … um …  it’s her life. First Lady does what she wants to do), they’ve chosen the sour grapes route.

You’re already rich. You got Lady Gaga to wear you stuff. Let it go, honey. Your privilege is showing.

    I’m guess I’m always amazed at why anyone would comment on the style choices of others. If someone wears something that we dislike, we comment that the person has no sense of style or “they can’t dress”. What we wear is an individual choice. Who are we to say who does or does not have a sense of style because we don’t agree with what they’re wearing anyway.

      look, we all know these designers are merely saying Lady O. refuses to allow these designers to dress her like she was white…oh, that’s right, she isn’t is she?

      maybe i should go to charm school so i can learn to be more polite with my code words…

  • so how much is the fuschia sweater that looked like it was made in middle school costing? Why is Westwood upset when Michelle O would never have worn her clothes anyway? Oh, hating on her actual ability to choose her own style? How dare she? Yawning and going to bed on this one. Westwood Fail!

    MIchelle dresses and looks better than Jackie Kennedy….so please

    • Elizabeth

      HAHAHA please! Obama only wishes she could’ve delivered jackie her tea! Let alone dress better. That’s hilarious

    see, Mrs. O is first and foremost a BBFR, and that’s a style you can’t buy in any store–therefore, her clothes are left with the almost impossible task of measuring up to HER;

    and like all BBFRs, what she’s got makes her clothes do it anyway!

    see, Oscar, it’s the CLOTHES that are burdened with having to share the fantasy of hoping to live up to HER beauty and majesty–not the other way round;

    but then you’d know that if you knew anything about being a BBFR;

    sorry, your cult doesn’t know a thing about Big Brown Full Round…accept when they’re melted into submission by the mere presence of one;

    guess that leaves the task to me and my President of marrying them;

    forgive me, but i think i can speak for my President, too, when i say this…

    assignment accepted;

  • What does this old bird know, she needs to check that overly dyed Lucille Ball disgusting red organe flaming hair. And she needs a makeup artist she looks like a corpse. I would want her to dress the FIRST LADY, let alone me.
