Late last week, human remains were found along the East River in New York City, and DNA has confirmed the remains are those of Avonte Oquendo. Officials notified the Avonte’s mother early Tuesday afternoon.

14-year-old Avonte was last seen on video leaving his Long Island City school on October 4th.  Family, friends and authorities frantically searched for Avonte and hoped for the best.  His missing poster was plastered in the subways and announcements made as part of the all-out effort to find him.

Last week, police received a 911 call after a 14-year-old girl stumbled across human remains near Powell Cove Boulevard and Endeavor Place.  Clothes matching what Avonte was last seen in were found as well.

Police have not identified Avonte’s cause and manner of death.

This is so sad to hear. I was really hoping that he was alive.

I can’t even imagine what his parents are going through.

    Rest in peace Avonte.

  • I heard about this on the news when they first discovered the remains. This is so unfortunate; I know his parents must be in pain.

  • This is terribly sad. I hope they find the cause of death and decide to hold whomever is responsible if that is the case. I can see this almost happening to someone suffering from Alzheimer as well. The treatment, care, and service that we provide to those who have mental challenges is abysmal.
