A joke previously made during an episode of The Colbert Report, didn’t play out too well when it was posted on Colbert’s Twitter account yesterday.

The tweet was originally a joke from Wednesday night’s show in which Colbert was mocking Redskins owner Dan Snyder for responding to complaints about his team name by announcing a foundation to help Native Americans.  Offended readers didn’t take the tweet lightly and created the #CancelColbert and some users understood the satire and other’s didn’t:

Colbert and The Colbert Report responded to the controversy by attempting to show the distinction between Colbert’s personal account and the show’s account:

This incident proves there are times when satire, racism and the medium in which jokes are delivered backfires.
