Talk about #BlackGirlMagic! Queen Latifah and Pariah director Dee Reese will team to bring Bessie Smith’s life to the screen.
According to Shadow & Act, the film will be titled Blue Goose Hollow and will offer an insightful look at Blue legend’s life and debunk many of the myths that have persisted since Smith’s death in 1937.
Latifah, who’s been lobbying to play Smith for years, will also produce the film in conjunction with HBO, The Zanuck Company, and Shelby Stone Productions.
Born in 1894, Smith was dubbed The Empress of the Blues and was the most popular (and highest paid) Black entertainer of her time. During her career, she recorded over 100 records and often accompanied legendary musicians like Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, Fletcher Henderson, Joe Smith, and Charlie Green.
Blue Goose Hollow is scheduled to begin production later this summer.
