In the aftermath of NBA sanctions against Donald Sterling for his racially charged comments, 50 Democratic senators signed a letter to the NFL urging commissioner Roger Goodell to force the Washington Redskins to change its team name.
“The [NFL] can no longer ignore this and perpetuate the use of this name as anything but what it is: a racial slur,” reads the letter, which was circulated by Senator Maria Cantwell, Democrat of Washington, and endorsed by Senator Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, the majority leader. “We urge the [NFL] to formally support a name change for the Washington football team.”
Cantwell said that “we are going to find out if the [NFL] can act against this kind of discrimination as quickly as the [NBA] did.”
“Listen, it is hard to get 50 people in this place to agree on anything,” she said.
Five Democratic senators did not sign the letter. It wasn’t circulated among Republicans.
NFL officials say they hadn’t received the letter, but league spokesman Brian McCarthy provided the New York Times with a statement saying the league “has long demonstrated a commitment to progressive leadership on issues of diversity and inclusion, both on and off the field.”
Clutchettes and Gents, do you support a Washington Redskins name change? What would you choose as the new team name?
