The subject of race can be very touchy. As finance executive Mellody Hobson says, it’s a “conversational third rail.” But, she says, that’s exactly why we need to start talking about it. In this engaging, persuasive talk, Hobson makes the case that speaking openly about race — and particularly about diversity in hiring — makes for better businesses and a better society.

I understand her point of view and found it interesting. But what bothered me is that hope talk. The fact that she believes that anything can be achieved with hope and hard work at school and later in life. Truth is school is the first place you learn how a black person is treated. With all the college degrees and everything, a black person is still struggling more than a convicted uneducated white person. It takes a lot more than “believe in equality and in yourself” to solve that problem.
