Not that this is much of a shocker but a new study proves that whites grossly overestimate how much crime is attributed to Black people.
Justin Pickett, an assistant professor at the University at Albany, who is the lead author of the study, used statistics from random surveys that were conducted from 2005-2010.
The results contradict the findings of a 2012 paper that argued the fact that Black people actually commit relatively lower crimes when compared to their white counterparts.
But the idea that whites believe that Blacks are guilty of committing more violent acts is in line with the general consensus. The media plays a huge part in perpetuating this belief through the disparaging images that are consistently on display. Viewers are bombarded with daily reminders of why men of color are to be feared due to their renegade approach on the streets and their propensity to crime.
It becomes embedded in the societal themes and manifests in ways that can be tragic as is the case of Michael Brown.
