Just who is Beyoncé trying to feed?
Beyoncé and her personal trainer/nutritionist Marco Borges have partnered up to launch a 22-day vegan meal delivery service — 22 Days Nutrition. The vegan home delivery service is based on of the philosophy that it takes 21 days to break a habit and the 22nd day is when you’re off to a fresh start.
But, I have to ask — has Beyoncé lost her mind?
In the 22 Days Nutrition vegan plan, Beyoncé is asking subscribers to pay up to $14.85 per meal plus delivery. I know it’s organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, soy-free and dairy-free — but what are we talking about here? Plants. You know like beans, seeds, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots. Like what grows out of the ground and is generally the cheapest part of a meal — and sometimes restaurants even give them away for free as garnish. Yeah those.
Don’t get me wrong, I love plants and plant-based meals but how did they come up with these prices? A full three-meals-a-day package is $629.79, plus a shipping fee of $19.95. The food may be flawless but that’s rent money. And you don’t even get to pick which grub you get.
For that kind of cash you could hire a personal chef to prepare you customized meals in your own home and they will even clean up afterwards. Or take a gang of vegan cooking classes. Or buy all the best vegan cookbooks. Or try out a bunch of vegan restaurants. Not to get a weekly drop off of “fresh” meals that you pay for without seeing a menu.
“I am so grateful that I took the challenge and credit Marco with leading by example. He is the most energetic person I know and it’s all because of his decision to live a healthy lifestyle. He came up with a great program to get people motivated to make better nutritional choices. All you have to do is try. If I can do it, anyone can. I am excited to partner with him.” — Beyoncé
The meals are 100% plant-based, made with organic ingredients, non-GMO, gluten-free, soy free and dairy free and are delivered once a week. There are three plans to choose from: 1 Meal A Day-lunch or dinner, 2 Meals A Day-lunch and dinner or 3 Meals A Day-breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals range from $9.76 to $16.50 per meal and can be ordered here.
Also, as someone who has been doing the vegan thing for a few years now, let me tell you: three plates of food does not feed a vegan.
“Oh you’re just being cheap,” you say. “Let Bey upgrade your marinades,” you say. “It’s all good,” you say. But, not really. Bey’s bougie bites are actually just perpetuating the myth that eating healthy is expensive. I’ll let you in on a secret: once you settle into a plant-based diet it’s actually cheaper than eating meat. No, seriously. And it certainly doesn’t cost $14.85 a plate.
