Emerging apparel and accessories website Nudevotion may pride themselves on being a one-stop shop for all things nude, but the latest addition to their product selection is making a bold fashion statement of a different kind in the midst of a very colorful conversation.

The lack of options available for Black women or women of color in general when it comes to nude-colored clothing that actually matches our skin tone is very apparent, and Nudevotion founder Steve Moscetti says it was this void that inspired him to create the site.

“Not long ago, ‘nude’ meant ‘matches white skin,'” Moscetti told Refinery 29. “Because not everyone’s ‘nude’ is the same, people with skin of any other color were implicitly unable to participate in the trend.”

Founded in 2014, the website features a wide range of apparel, accessories and shoe selections from high-end designers like Tom Ford and Saint Laurent, to more affordable products from popular brands like ASOS and ALDO. The site also features a “dark nude” search filter option that allows customers to view all products available in that specific color category at once.

“There’s a technical challenge in adopting more than two skin tones: Colors in product photos are not always accurate and every monitor may display them in different ways due to different calibration, brightness, or color saturation.”

Although Moscetti admits that selecting products to feature that accommodate more than just “white skin” or “dark skin” is a complicated process, he insists that Nudevotion is up for the challenge.
