The congregation at United Nations Church International in Richmond was threatened by a crazed white man, just a day after 9 people were killed in a Charleston, South Carolina church.
Witnesses say that the unidentified white man banged on the door and threatened to kill the people within and was yelling racial slurs.
Police and the congregation thought the man had a gun, but it turned out to be a long piece of plastic, he was using to bang on the door.
“I never thought I’d see the day when police have to be at church,” police Capt. Chris Gleason told the Times-Dispatch.
Bishop Oren Pullings told WRIC the disturbance started around 8:45 p.m., after a Bible study session — an eerie similarity to the Charleston shooting, which began after the suspected killer, Dylann Storm Roof, had sat in Bible study with his soon-to-be-victims for nearly an hour. Roof, 21, told the crowd, “You’re taking over our country” in racist rant before the bloodshot, survivors said.
Witnesses said the man yelled, “I’m going to kill all you and all you are gonna get killed tonight,” according to the New York Daily News.
The man was taken into custody and ordered to a local hospital for 72-hour mental health evaluation.
