50-Cent

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson broke the Internet today, but probably not for the reason he wanted. Monday, the “Get Rich or Die Trying” rapper filed for bankruptcy in Connecticut just three days after a New York jury ordered the emcee to pay Lavonia Leviston $5 million for invading her privacy.

Back in 2009, Jackson posted a video—complete with lewd commentary—of Leviston and a former boyfriend having sex on his website to embarrass fellow rapper Rick Ross with whom Leviston has a child. When she found out what happened, Leviston sued Jackson for invasion of privacy and won. She was awarded $2.5 million for the privacy violation and another $2.5 million for emotional duress.

Jackson was slated to deliver his financial information to the New York jury on Monday so they could decide if any other punitive damages will be awarded to Leviston, but he filed for bankruptcy instead, delaying the process.

Twitter erupted with jokes about Jackson’s financial situation, but the rapper said his bankruptcy filing is purely a business move.

“I’m taking the precautions that any other good businessperson would take in this situation,” Jackson said during the press junket for his upcoming film Southpaw. “You know when you’re successful and stuff, you become a target. I don’t wanna be a bullseye. I don’t want anybody to pick me as the guy that they just come to with astronomical claims and go through all that.”

While court documents lists both Jackson’s consumer debts and assets at between $10 and $50 million, Forbes put his net worth around $155 million in May.
