Listen, I’ve never come face-to-face with a wild bear, but I’m pretty sure if I ever do, I won’t handle it like this woman.
During a solo kayaking trip that was supposed to stretch from Ketchikan to Petersburg in Alaska, Mary Maley encountered a black bear attacking her boat.
Instead of going back into the cabin and waiting for the bear to leave, Maley decided to take matters into her own hands.
During the incident, which was captured on video, Maley tells the bear, “I’m going to pepper spray you in the face.”
Apparently, that was supposed to encourage the bear to leave Maley’s kayak alone, but of course, it had the opposite effect.
After being pepper sprayed, the bear demolishes the boat while Maley yells, “Stop it bear!” and “Why are you doing that” over and over again.
Maley continues to plead with the bear for a while before saying, “It’s September, why are you here? You’re supposed to be sleep!”
Clearly, the bear didn’t get the memo, and I could almost picture it channeling Nicki Minaj.
Despite having her vessel destroyed, Maley escaped unharmed.
She wrote on YouTube: “Shortly after the bear left and I drug the kayak back to the cabin door step. Then I swam to the S/V anchored in the bay. They did not have their radio on and I feared I would be stranded! The German flagged S/v Caledonia took me and my things to Wrangell where I am trying to repair my kayak now.”
Good luck, girl. But maybe next time, leave the bear alone.
