dr olivia hooker black wall street survivor

Dr. Olivia Hooker has seen a lot in her 100 years. The retired Fordham University professor is the last survivor of the Tulsa Riots and a video made when she was 95-years-old has resurfaced.

In the video Hooker, talks about the Tulsa riots and Black Wall Street. She was only 6-years-old at the time, but the events were life changing.

“They destroyed everything but the crosses..they were giving us a message on what we could and couldn’t have,” Hooker stated.

In 1921, the angry white mob destroyed the Greenwood section where her father owned a department store. The unrest began after a young black man was accused of grabbing the arm of a young white woman.

As the last of the survivors, Hooker’s legacy is still in the making. She become the first black woman to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard, and looks to World War II-style restitution.

“I would have liked what they did when the Japanese were mistreated in California, at least they got something from the government,” Hooker said in an interview earlier this year.

On May 20, 2015, President Barack Obama recognized the Coast Guard service and legacy of Dr. Olivia Hooker while in attendance at the 134th Commencement of the United States Coast Guard Academy.
