Zendaya is quickly becoming one of our favs. In addition to being super talented, the 19-year-old isn’t afraid to speak out either.

When Giuliana Rancic said the Disney star’s faux-locs probably smelled of “patchouli and weed,” the teen fired off a letter schooling Rancic about implicit bias, and after Internet trolls called her parents “ugly,” she shut them down too. Now, Zendaya is shining a light on unnecessary photoshopping in magazines.

Zendaya is no stranger to fashion spreads, but when she saw herself in the latest issue of Modeliste, she couldn’t stay silent. For some strange reason the magazine photoshopped the curve out of her hips and thighs, making them look abnormally thin, and Zendaya called them out.

“Had a new shoot come out today and was shocked when I found my 19 year old hips and torso quite manipulated,” the actress wrote on Instagram.  “These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have. Anyone who knows who I am knows I stand for honest and pure self love.”

After they were put on blast, Modeliste pulled down the retouched images. However, the fact that they photoshopped Zendaya’s shapely thighs in the first place speaks volumes about the industry’s standard of beauty.

  • What is sad is the fact that the photo on the right looks better than the photo on the left. However, they keep pushing the aesthetic of slender streamlined figures with little curves.

The photo on the right looks a lot better. The one on the left doesn’t look like a natural woman.

  • I agree with Zendaya completely on this issue.

In addition to the reshaping of the thighs, someone got a little out of hand with the saturation. There are waaay too many red tonal values here. The original was definitely too cool and in need of warming up but they went a little too far with it imo.

      It’s a bit ‘glazed ham’, isn’t it?

Haha! It definitely is and it’s such an obvious manipulation too. The belt loop on the jacket is way too flat. It’s showing no bunching, or give, like fabric should. I’ve never heard of this magazine so maybe this was just an off day in the editing department.

Maybe the fact that you (and me) have never heard of it explains why the magazine can’t get its editing in order. I’ll bet they’re working off of Baby’s First Photoshop until the publication’s circulation can swell the budget.
