While taxi drivers have just sued New York City and its Taxi and Limousine Commission alleging Uber is destroying their business, Al Roker has just reminded drivers and their lenders they have no one to blame but their racist selves.

The Today Show co-anchor took to Twitter to air out his grievances Saturday night when it seems he and his son were passed over by a cab driver for no other reason than being black.

One thing you can always count on when it comes to Al Roker is keeping it real. While some black news anchors like to downplay racism or pretend as though they’ve risen above it, Al not only called an “ignorant” and “dumb” spade a spade, he didn’t make the situation just about him because, at the end of the day, if Al Roker can’t get a cab… we’re all screwed.

Taxi and Labor Commission Chair Meera Joshi responded to the weatherman’s claims, telling the New York Daily News:

“Service refusal goes to the core of the taxi industry’s social contract with the riding public and it will not be tolerated. We’re grateful that Mr. Roker took the time to file a complaint, and I can assure him that we will investigate this thoroughly and take every appropriate action.”

Let’s hope so.

I was listening to one of my favorite podcast About Race and this very topic was the discussion. Many African Americans have opted to use Uber for this very reason the racist immigrant taxi drivers. I am considering using Uber as well and i live in Texas. The taxi drivers here mostly Middle Eastern and African tend to be very racist and i have experienced racism from the taxi drivers especially the Middle Eastern cabbies.

well Uber gives us options we don’t have to beg them to take our money!

  • “Roker also described how the situation was made worse since he was accompanied by his teenage son Nick. “What really hurts, my 13 yr. old by was with me and asked why the cabbie passed us. I said, “Nick, ignorant people make dumb choices.”

Yes, it is true some ppl make ignorant choices.

Makes me wonder how Mr. Roker responded to his son when asked, “Dad, why do so many of today’s African American music performers hatefully characterize our moms, sisters, grandmas, daughters, aunts and nieces as less than human *itches and *hores unworthy of respect?”
