Celebs were out in full force at LA’s Shrine Auditorium yesterday for A&E and iHeartMedia’s “Shining A Light: A Concert For Progress On Race In America”, an event put together to raise awareness and confront issues of racial tension that are sweeping America to this day. Rocking a chic gold and black Balmain ensemble, Nicki Minaj was joined by countless others including parents-to-be John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, Jamie Foxx, Miguel and Big Sean.

The Raptress recited the late Maya Angelou’s powerful “Still I Rise” piece during an on stage solo appearance and folks from the east to the west of the internet are commenting on how awkward the performance once, but many are also commending her for choosing to recite it.

I don’t see anything awkward about her reading. I love that poem, and she recited it just fine.

  • Maya Angelou was a legend. For Nicki Minaj to recite her poem “Still I Rise” is sweet.

In my opinion she takes away from the seriousness of the poem no matter what she does i feel like you can’t take her serious shes usually obscene and vulgar so it was a little awkward plus she looked like she wanted to laugh smh

I love Maya Angelou and i love that poem along with Phenomenal Woman.

  • Mahogany

She’s a rapper but I didn’t see any passion when she read that poem.

Right, she’s just reading off the teleprompter. Sad, she could’ve done a lot with this considering the tone of her career.
