The Chicago police officer involved in the 2014 shooting death of Laquan McDonald was charged with murder today, the Associated Press reports.

Officer Jason Van Dyke, 37, was charged with first-degree murder at a bond hearing expected to be held later on today. It’s been 35 years since a cop was charged with first-degree murder for an on-duty fatality, The Chicago Tribune stated.

This week will also see the release of dashcam footage taken during the shooting on Oct. 20, 2014. The video allegedly shows McDonald walking away from officers while holding a knife. According to people who’ve viewed the video, Van Dyke shot McDonald 16 times in the back. Autopsy reports show that McDonald was shot at least twice, and he also had PCP in his system, according to the AP.

I won’t cheer until this race soldier is actually convicted.

  • RIP Laquan McDonald.

  • Chazz A

A charge is a long way from a conviction and sentencing, but at least the murderer
will not be allowed to work desk duty and keep his badge!
I plan to watch this case as it develops.

    • Me too. The story is very sad since it shows the preciousness of life. Also, it reminds of us about the commitment to justice that we adhere to.

    • Chazz A

Yes, this was such a horrible loss of young black life. There was absolutely no sane reason for that murderer to unload a clip into the brother’s back!

    • Racism and police terrorism by their definitions relate to inhumanity and insanity. The police and Rahm Emanuel are having their press conference now.

    • They just shown the video. The video is very disturbing.

    • Chazz A

Yes very disturbing. This rogue cop is a murderer!

    • A FOIA lawsuit from independent journalist caused the video to be released. The DA and other legal authorities in Chicago knew about the video for months. This situation is that there is a problem about how police officers, who even show blatant murder, are not readily tried of first degree murder in American society. The rogue cop is indeed a murderer.

    • Chazz A

Right and this is a prime example of why the DOJ needs to be dismantled and rebuilt.

    • You’re right. We witness systematic issues of police terrorism and police murder. There is absolutely no justification for the late black male to be shot this many times and he was not a direct to the officers at all. It’s a shame that the young Brother will never have a chance to have a wife, to have kids, and to live a life much longer than 30. It breaks your heart. Also, we are inspired to carry onward what his family would want to us do. The late Brother’s family would want us to stand up for justice.

    • Chazz A

Right on brother, the struggle is real. I can’t begin to think of the extreme pain and anger the young brother’s family had to endure.

Yes-, AG Lynch is another disgrace. There is a colorofchange petition that is being sent to her to persuade her to, in their words, “do her job” and investigate race based police murder in this country. When she visited Ferguson last year during the uprising,, the first thing she did when meeting a group of cops was tell them (in front of cameras) what a “wonderful” job they are doing. I do not know how negroes like this sleep at night.

    • Chazz A

I was not aware of the petition, I will check it out most-def. Lynch has become another tap-dancing, “talking head puppet” just like the rest of these high profile nee-grows.

    • I agree with you Sister. It’s a shame that no one has been charged involving Ferguson or in the case of Eric Garner being chocked to death. Many Cops are killing black people with impunity. Over 1,000 people have died at the hands of the police while other industrialized nations have a much lower amount of dead people each year at the hands of the cops. The cop Jason van Dyke (since we have every justification to show the names of these murderers) has no regret about his nefarious deed. It took more than one year for the video to be released and the cops in Chicago used a stalling tactic in order for them to try to sugarcoat the brutality of the murder. Lynch should do her job and investigate these issues, charge these criminals, and fulfill her obligations. Speaking out is important and laws have to be changed too.

    • vintage3000

Jason van Dyke (yup let’s keep the names of these murderers in the news) actually had the gall to say his family’s lives are now being threatened because of this video. And you know they are going to get 24/7 police protection, while this latest young man’s family has to deal with this Thanksgiving week. It’s strange because it would seem we needed people like Lynch in these spaces to help protect us. All these decades after the civil rights movement and she is just as useless to Black people as any white bigot.

    • I’m not surprised at the remarks of the murderer. The murderer can come home at night and eat with his family in the future. The family of the murdered Brother will mourn. The late Brother wont come to his family’s home physically for the holidays. That murderer van Dyke should have really done his job and not kill the Brother in the first place. You made an interesting point about the civil rights movement. Many of the most radical freedom fighters died in the 1960’s. After 1968, some black leaders chose to ally with the system instead of truly fighting it. That is why we have a segment of our community who loves neoliberalism, the status quo, and a reactionary agenda when it comes to these issues. We have to call it as we see it. This situation involves murder, brutality, and excessive force. The cops still shot bullets into the Brother even after he was on the ground. That’s sick. We want justice

      Goodnight Sister.

    • HighFashionJunkie

yes, let’s hope there is NOT an all white jury who will of course sympathize with him and he’ll walk.

    • Chazz A

    • I agree with you Sister.

    • HighFashionJunkie

Hey Truth and yes, let’s just hope that justice won’t fail us this time around as it has in these types of situations that we’ve seen before. Have a blessed Thanksgiving Friend!

    • Hello Sister.

We have been here before and we wish for real justice to transpire. The courageous people of Chicago who are standing up for truth should be respected.

Have a Great Day too Friend.

    this was a execution y’all!

Oh, they are good. Anita Alvarez, you slick ass bitch. She is setting this man up for an acquittal like she did with Rekia Boyd”s killer. First degree murder is premeditated murder – aka – a planned murder. This case warrants a second degree charge with another charge of manslaughter and charge the police officials of making false statements. If Van Dyke indeed walks, people should bring their pitchforks and look for the state attorney’s office due to Alvarez’s incompetence or intent for filling the wrong charges on cops accused of wrongdoing.
