Last week, rumors circulated that some of  Lupita Nyong’o’s  scenes from the new Star Wars movie were cut because of her lackluster performance. U.K. publication The Sun wrote that J.J. Abrams had to “massively cut” Nyong’o’s role because “there was a general sense that something wasn’t working.”

Those rumors couldn’t be any further from the truth, according to Abrams. The director released a statement refuting the Sun’s article.

“The number of rumors floating around about The Force Awakens is truly stunning. Some are wonderfully funny, others simply preposterous,” Abrams told Page Six . “But the only one more ridiculous than Jar Jar Binks being a Sith Lord is that I cut Lupita Nyong’o’s performance because it wasn’t satisfactory.”

He continued: “In truth, her performance wasn’t satisfactory. It was spectacular. She has brought the character of Maz Kanata to life in the most wonderful, wise, touching, deep and funny way. Lupita never ceased to amaze me. Yes, we tried many approaches, and we finally landed on just what the film needed. She elevated all the scenes she is in, I’m forever grateful, and can’t wait for people to see her stunning performance.”Earlier this year, in an interview with  Essence , Nyong’o spoke about her role.

“I was on the way to the beach and all of sudden J.J.’s on the phone. I asked to see the script and they flew someone to Morocco with the script so I could read it,” she explained. “I was immediately interested in the character. I like to get lost in the transformation and I felt like this character would offer me that.”

I guess we will know the truth when we movie comes out.

I think we know the truth now. She’s in the trailer, so I’m sure they probably didn’t cut her from the movie. And the way JJ is raving about her, I highly doubt it.

Trailers often have no real reflection on the movie they are advertising. So I am just taking a wait and see approach.

Sometimes you see scenes that are in the trailers but never appear in the movies, but all indicators point to her being in the movie, and a significant part. Well, it’s motion capture, so she’s not actually physically in the movie, but you know what I’m saying.
On yahoo, there is a section today about how bad the rumors were before Phantom Menance. I remember some of them. They didn’t even have the name of the movie right, which seems like the easiest piece of information to get.

Finally saw the movie. Lupita was in it for 5 minutes. I don’t think her part was cut because she did a poor job. It was a long movie and every scene couldn’t be in it. She wasn’t great or awful. I think any decent actor could have had her role. I think we just wanted more of her.

I saw it too. I think she did an excellent job. It’s motion capture, but she had a flawless delivery, in my opinion. She really “made” the character, in my opinion. Even though it was an alien, it was relatable. I think we all may know an older lady who asks jokingly about her “boyfriend” and all of that. Plus, she did motion capture on top of the voice acting, and I think she really communicated the character well both physically and vocally.
But, more on subject, I found why they cut the role. There are articles about all of the scenes that were cut. I think somewhere around 30 minutes or so of footage was cut, some of that with full effects. Anyway, JJ Abrams explained that she was supposed to travel with the characters further into the story, but there really wasn’t anything for her to do, or a legitimate reason for her to be there. So they cut it. And that makes sense. The movie is already 2 hours and 16 minutes, so there’s no reason to have scenes that don’t move the story forward.

  • The most important point is the obvious one. Tons of people have praised Lupita Nyong’o for her great acting talent, for her eloquence, and for her humbleness. We all agree that she has an incredible gift and she is shining her talent to the world in a great way.
