Variety asked Hollywood heart-throb George Clooney for his thoughts on what Hollywood should be doing differently to ensure we can abandon the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag altogether. “I don’t think it’s a problem of who you’re picking as much as it is: How many options are available to minorities in film, particularly in quality films?” he said.
While many are up in arms over the fact that there are no black actors or actresses nominated this year, others are arguing that the academy had slim pickings to choose from. Creed, Concussion, Straight Outta Compton and Beasts Of No Nation pretty much round out the list of options and those who deem the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag unnecessary to use this time around are saying those options – while they were all great movies – were not exactly Oscar-worthy. (Creed Best Director nom excluded)
“There should be 20 or 30 or 40 films of the quality that people would consider for the Oscars. By the way, we’re talking about African-Americans. For Hispanics, it’s even worse. We need to get better at this. We used to be better at it.” he added.
