“Winning was surreal, a totally out-of-body experience…I thought I would suddenly feel different—that I would finally figure out how to organize my underwear drawer. I’m grateful and blown away by it all, but I’m still me. I still have work to do…” — Audra McDonald, ESSENCE
ESSENCE Magazine’s April ‘Careers’ issue features the incomparable Audra McDonald. Inside, the Broadway superstar shares how following her passion literally saved her life. Sixteen years after a failed suicide attempt, Audra is among one of the most revered on Broadway boasting a record breaking six Tony Awards. But even still, she admits she doesn’t have it ALL the way together just yet.
“I thought I would feel different [after winning my sixth Tony]—that I would finally figure out how to organize my underwear drawer,” she tells ESSENCE. “I’m grateful and blown away by it all, but I’m still me. I still have work to do.”
You can watch Audra in the upcoming HBO broadcast of Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar & Grill on March 12th and see her this season in the Broadway musical Shuffle Along, beginning previews March 15th.
The April issue hits newsstands April 18th.
