Ashley Harrison was riding with her fiancé, Garvin Whitmore in Chicago, over the weekend when someone walked up to their car and shot him in the head.
After watching the father of her two children murdered, Harrison grabbed a gun that was in the car and fired several gunshots in the air, attempting to scare off her fiancé’s killer. Harrison’s actions were caught by a nearby surveillance camera, now the 26-year-old mother is facing felony gun charges.
According to reports, Harrison was emotional as she was arraigned in a Cook County courtroom on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
Oddly enough, while setting her bond at $250,000, Judge Adam Donald Bourgeois Jr. seemed to think Harrison acted in self-defense.
“That sounds like self-defense to me,” Bourgeois said during the hearing.
He continued, “What would you have her do? I mean, she chose the life to be out here with guys like that, that do that sort of thing.”
The couple’s family said Whitmore, a factory worker, was a hard worker who took care of his family.
“He was a good working man who went to work every day,” Diana Davis, Harrison’s aunt, said. “He made sure he took care of his family.”
Tragically, the couple had moved out of Chicago four years ago hoping to escape the very violence that ended up taking Whitmore’s life.
