In a Facebook Live video, Azealia Banks defended her controversial decision to bleach her skin. The outspoken 25 year old rapper, known more for her racist and often vile remarks about everyone from Skai Jackson to Zayn Malik, doesn’t think that deciding to lighten her skin makes her any less “pro-black” than before and even compared bleaching to hair extensions and plastic surgery.
“I don’t think it’s important to discuss the cultural significance of skin bleaching anymore,” she says. “As a black person in this world, you assimilate. There are things you accept. This has become the norm because it’s happening all the time.”
She went on to ask, “What’s the difference between getting a nose job and changing your skin color? Nobody was upset when I was wearing 30 inch weaves and tearing out my edges and doing all types of sh*t like that. You guys loved it.”
She also added, “I guess people look at the skin lightning, bleaching thing as something different… as another assimilation thing. It’s a continuation of the falsification of self with being a black person in America. To say it negates anything I’ve said about the current situation of blackness in America is ignorant and stupid. What do body modifications have to do with somebody’s level of intellect? The two don’t correlate.”
Shortly after the video was posted, several people called her a hypocrite for lightening her skin considering all of her past comments in regards to cultural appropriation.
“Look at this back peddling skin bleaching dummy,” one commenter tweeted. “Azealia Banks is just disgusting in every way,” said another. “Never would have guessed that Azealia Banks hated Azealia Banks as much as we do,” another added.
What are your thoughts on Banks’ latest tomfoolery? Is skin bleaching no different from altering one’s appearance with hair extensions and makeup? Or is lightening one’s skin a clear indication of self hatred to the highest degree?
