A mother of a New Jersey college student has filed a federal lawsuit against William Paterson University for failing to investigate her daughter’s rape properly.

Cherelle Locklear committed suicide last year at the age of 21, 2 months after she was raped. Locklear’s body was found in a bathroom at the university. According to Marquesa Jackson-Locklear, her daughter was raped at the Sigma Pi house, but that William Paterson “did not engage in even a modicum of the investigation required by law.”

The lawsuit also names Sigma Pi, William Paterson President Kathleen Waldron, other employees at the school and its police force as responsible for the young woman’s death.

According to Jackson-Locklear, her daughter reported the rape to the campus administrator in October, but it wasn’t immediately reported to the police. But when it was, the rapist wasn’t questioned by police and didn’t receive any type of punishment from the university.

The university did not issue a statement about the newly filed lawsuit.
