The weather channel has a lot of ‘splaining to do after after one of their meteorologists, Jennifer Delgado, blamed Haiti’s deforestation on the country’s hungry children. Matter of fact, it seems that an explanation simply will not cut it, because a Change.org petition to have the weather woman fired is currently circulating online that is only about 400 signatures shy of its goal. While talking about Hurricane Matthew, Delgado initially expressed concern for the country, as she pointed to a map to highlight the impact of deforestation in Haiti. Then she made the facepalm, likely career-ending statement:
“They take all the trees down, they burn the trees,”she said, even the kids there, they’re so hungry they actually eat the trees.”
It should be noted that Jennifer Delgado is from Haiti’s neighboring country, The Dominican Republic. Much racial tension has always existed between the two nations, however racial hostilities were escalated after The Dominican Republic revoked the citizenship of Dominicans (individuals born in the country) of Haitian descent, creating 200,000 stateless people— a form of state-sanctioned racism. Delgado’s insensitive comments unearth the shameful reality stereotypes about Haitians prevail in the Spanish-speaking nation.
Nevertheless, some are calling to attention the fact that it is possible the meteorologist was merely reading from a teleprompter and not responsible for writing the racist remarks. According to the success of this petition, it seems that the public most certainly wants to hold someone accountable. Only time will tell the tale of whether or not that happens and who will possibly shoulder responsibility for misrepresenting an entire nation.
