Elexis Webster is the epitome of a Student Rising Above and beating all of the odds that weighed against her young life.
“I grew up on the streets with an abusive drug addict for a mother, along with an older brother who molested me countless times, plus constant sickness. My life wasn’t a life, it was a war zone,” she wrote in her application to SRA.
Elexis was not only homeless during her childhood, but also suffered from physical and mental abuse. At the lowest point in her life, a police officer found Elexis and her sister abandoned in a car, her mother was arrested and the girls were placed in foster care. And that’s where she met her “Mema”.
Elexis said her Mema helped her strive for the best, and her life drastically turned around.
And now as a junior in high school with a 4.1 GPA and Elexis has her sights set on collegiate success thanks to mentoring and support from SRA.
“It’s unbelievable to say that I went through that. I see success. I see happiness and I see peace,” she said.
